Panna Cotta A creamy, silky dessert made from sweetened cream thickened with gelatin, often served with a fruit coulis, caramel, or chocolate sauce

Panna Cotta, which means “cooked cream” in Italian, is a classic Italian dessert known for its silky, creamy texture and subtle, sweet flavor. Originating from the northern region of Piedmont, this dessert is incredibly versatile and can be flavored with a variety of ingredients, such as vanilla, coffee, or fruit. Panna Cotta is often served with a topping of fresh fruit, caramel, or berry compote, adding a refreshing contrast to the rich creaminess of the dessert. It’s a simple yet elegant dessert, perfect for any occasion.

How to Make Panna Cotta

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin powder
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Fresh berries, fruit compote, or caramel sauce (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Bloom the Gelatin:

    • Pour the milk into a small bowl and sprinkle the gelatin powder over the surface. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, allowing the gelatin to soften (this is known as “blooming”).
  2. Heat the Cream Mixture:

    • In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream and sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is fully dissolved and the cream is just beginning to simmer (do not let it boil).
  3. Combine with Gelatin:

    • Remove the cream mixture from the heat and add the vanilla extract. Stir in the gelatin mixture until the gelatin is completely dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
  4. Pour into Molds:

    • Lightly grease 6 small ramekins or molds with a neutral oil. Pour the panna cotta mixture into the prepared molds.
  5. Chill:

    • Cover the molds with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or until the panna cotta is fully set.
  6. Serve:

    • To unmold, dip the bottom of each mold in warm water for a few seconds, then invert onto a serving plate. Serve with fresh berries, fruit compote, or caramel sauce.
