Karađorđeva Šnicla Breaded and fried fried chicken steak rolled and stuffed with cheese and ham and kajmak

Karađorđeva Šnicla, also known as the “Serbian Steak,” is a beloved dish in Serbian cuisine. Named after the famous Serbian revolutionary Karađorđe, this dish is a rolled veal or pork schnitzel filled with kajmak (a type of creamy dairy spread) and sometimes ham, then breaded and fried until golden brown. It is often served with tartar sauce, fries, and a slice of lemon. This dish is a staple in traditional Serbian restaurants and is loved for its rich, indulgent flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 4 veal or pork schnitzels (about 150g each)
  • 100g kajmak (or cream cheese)
  • 4 slices of ham (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Lemon wedges and tartar sauce for serving

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Schnitzels: If the schnitzels are thick, use a meat mallet to pound them until they are about 1/4 inch thick. Season each schnitzel with salt and pepper.

  2. Fill the Schnitzels: Spread a tablespoon of kajmak in the center of each schnitzel. If using ham, place a slice on top of the kajmak. Carefully roll each schnitzel, tucking in the sides to enclose the filling completely. Secure with toothpicks if necessary.

  3. Bread the Schnitzels: Dredge each rolled schnitzel in flour, shaking off the excess. Dip them in the beaten eggs, then coat them in breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure the breadcrumbs adhere well.

  4. Fry the Schnitzels: In a large skillet, heat enough vegetable oil to cover the schnitzels halfway. Fry the schnitzels over medium heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. Remove them from the oil and drain on paper towels.

  5. Serve: Serve the Karađorđeva Šnicla hot, with lemon wedges and tartar sauce on the side. Traditionally, it is served with fries or a side salad.
