Knedle sa šljivama Potato dumplings filled with plums, coated in breadcrumbs, sugar, and cinnamon

Gomboce, also known as Knedle sa šljivama, is a traditional Serbian dessert featuring sweet plums encased in soft potato dough. These dumplings are boiled and then typically rolled in a mixture of sugar and ground nuts. They are a comforting, nostalgic treat often enjoyed during the summer when plums are in season, but can be made year-round. The combination of the slightly tart plums with the sweet, buttery coating creates a delightful balance of flavors and textures.

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Filling:

  • 12-16 plums, pitted (preferably Italian plums or any other firm variety)

For Coating:

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup ground walnuts or breadcrumbs (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Potatoes:

    • Boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Drain and mash the potatoes until smooth. Allow to cool slightly.
  2. Make the Dough:

    • In a large bowl, combine the mashed potatoes with the egg and salt.
    • Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  3. Shape the Dumplings:

    • Take a small piece of dough (about 1 tablespoon) and flatten it in your hand.
    • Place a plum in the center and gently wrap the dough around it, sealing the edges to form a smooth ball. Repeat with the remaining dough and plums.
  4. Cook the Dumplings:

    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
    • Carefully drop the dumplings into the boiling water, cooking in batches if necessary. Cook for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dumplings float to the surface and are cooked through.
    • Remove the dumplings with a slotted spoon and let them drain.
  5. Coat the Dumplings:

    • In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar with ground walnuts or breadcrumbs if using.
    • Roll the drained dumplings in the sugar mixture until evenly coated.
  6. Serve:

    • Serve the Gomboce warm, optionally with a sprinkle of additional sugar or a dollop of sour cream.
