Šopska Salata is a traditional salad originating from the Balkans, particularly popular in Serbia, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia. It’s a refreshing and simple dish made from fresh vegetables and topped with crumbled feta cheese. The salad is known for its vibrant colors and crisp textures, making it a perfect side dish for grilled meats or as a light appetizer.

Ingredients:

  • 4 ripe tomatoes, diced
  • 1 cucumber, peeled and sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 100g feta cheese, crumbled
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar or lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Vegetables:
    • Dice the tomatoes, slice the cucumber, and cut the bell pepper into thin strips.
    • Finely chop the red onion.
  2. Assemble the Salad:
    • In a large bowl, combine the tomatoes, cucumber, bell pepper, and red onion.
  3. Season:
    • Drizzle with olive oil and red wine vinegar (or lemon juice).
    • Add salt and pepper to taste, and gently toss the salad to mix the ingredients.
  4. Add Cheese:
    • Crumble the feta cheese over the top of the salad.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Optionally, garnish with fresh parsley.
    • Serve immediately as a side dish or appetizer.
